If you never own another Tai Chi book, please own this one.”  - The Tai Chi Player.

Note: this is the paperback version. eBook version is available here.

If you have ever wondered what the ancient practice of Tai Chi can offer, but have been put off by the usual sales pitch, then this fresh, irreverent guide is for you. It will engage you from the first page, with its mix of humour, evocative illustrations, philosophy, and practical advice.

Written by Paul Read, an instructor of over 30 years, the book steps away from the clichés and stereotypes often associated with Eastern practices. Instead, it introduces principles in a playful, accessible way by using apes, cats, and tortoises—as metaphors to illustrate core concepts.

At its heart, this guide isn't just about Tai Chi; it’s about how to live more efficiently and mindfully by embracing the Taoist principle of “Leaving Things Undone.” Ideal for anyone interested in wellness, mindfulness, and productivity, it offers a toolkit for achieving better health, balance, and calm in an increasingly hectic world.

Explains the essence of Tai Chi without dwelling on form. A very useful addition even to a seasoned practitioner. I found it provoking and profound with useful practical exercises that can be put into daily life." - Jim Grigg

"HOW TO" SKILLS FOUND IN THE BOOK:

  1. Stand like a Flamingo
  2. Embrace your Tiger
  3. Live Like a Tortoise
  4. Soften Your Glare
  5. Walk like Cat
  6. Swing like a Monkey
  7. Breathe through your Feet
  8. Sway Like Bamboo

Find out why the author of Movements of Magic described it as “a great contribution to the world of Tai Chi.” This book is perfect for both long-time Tai Chi practitioners and those new to the idea of mindful living.

"I have been playing tai chi for 15 years and teach my own class. I've  read many books on Tai chi but can't remember being inspired by any of them as much as 'The Manual of the Bean Curd Boxer" Barry C.

This New Edition is accompanied by striking visuals, extended Q&A sessions, an Online Video Playlist featuring the workshops that appear in the book and a bonus course on Balance.

Application of Tai Chi to everyday life

This is the second book in the Tai Chi trilogy written by Paul. It goes a little deeper into the Art and it's everyday applications. Well written and highly recommended.

A fun quirky description of the elements of Tai Chi and how to integrate it into everyday life. As a Tai Chi teacher I would recommend this book to any serious Tai Chi player as a 21st century insight into the mysteries of the Tai Chi Classics.Maybe not in line with everyone's sense of humour but I found it most enjoyable perhaps because of)l.Michele Gibson - Tai Chi N.I.
